Self Portrait, 2016
18x24, pastel on paper
Maureen Maloney was born in Iowa as the oldest of seven children, surrounded by stories, creativity, and laughter. On her grandparents’ farm, she spent as much time as possible outdoors, exploring and caring for the horses.
She earned a B.A. in Biological Pre-Medical Illustration from Iowa State University, studied for her MFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University, and has built a successful career as a designer and creative director, working with companies such as Charles Schwab and Walmart. She and her husband now run their own design firm. Her goal is to create artwork that not only supports storytelling but adds something unexpected, memorable, and deeply connected to nature.
Maureen draws inspiration from everyday life, travel adventures, and vivid childhood memories. During the summer of 2025, she spent a week in an artist residency at Jen Tough Studios in Santa Fe. Her work was selected for the juried exhibition WILD, on view from August 16th to September 28th, 2025 at Jen Tough Gallery. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Sierra Club. Maureen is also a proud member of the New Mexico Women in the Arts.
She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her husband Mike, their dog, and three horses—Horton, Jackson, and Molly.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I create mixed media paintings using collage, house paint, gouache, and other materials to explore the quiet beauty and wild spirit of the natural world. I also work in oil using a non-toxic approach. My inspiration comes from a lifelong connection with nature—from the powerful presence of a moose at a quiet pond to the intricate markings of a beetle. I’m always observing, sketching, and collecting impressions from the wildlife and landscapes I encounter. These experiences shape the emotional foundation of my work.
My art reflects a personal bond with animals and wild places. It represents memories, fleeting moments, and the sense of wonder that comes from being fully present outdoors. I hope to convey how time in nature can restore us—how even a still moment beneath the trees can heal the soul.
As an avid camper, I’ve explored national and state parks, BLM lands, and remote areas across the country. These travels inspire both the subjects and surfaces of my work. My process begins with layered backgrounds—paint, texture, and collage—built intuitively until they capture a specific mood or memory. When the feeling is right, I pair the background with a subject I’ve personally observed in the wild. I then use gouache or oil to bring that subject to life—sharing not just how it looked, but how it felt to be there. My goal is to create a moment of connection between the viewer and the natural world.
